In a joint effort to address the growing concerns of mental health challenges and substance abuse, the Network for Rural Missions (NRM), in partnership with Savannah State University (USA), launched a comprehensive awareness campaign across seven communities—Nabulik, Tusik, Kpemali, Boatargu, Nyalinkpia, Badimsuguru, and Nakpanduri. The initiative also targeted educational institutions, including three senior high schools (Bunkpurugu Senior High, Nakpanduri Business Senior High, and Presbyterian Senior High School) and five basic schools (Kemali R/C, AG JHS, Kingdom Stars JHS, Christ Foundation JHS, and Presby JHS).
The primary goal of this campaign was to educate and empower the youth, who are often the most vulnerable, on the issues of mental health and substance abuse.
By creating awareness on the importance of mental well-being and the dangers associated with substance abuse, the program sought to create a culture of openness, support, and informed decision-making among the youth and the broader community.
The program included a series of interactive sessions, delivered by seasoned educators from the AG CARE Clinic in Nakpanduri and a group of visiting student volunteers and professionals from Savannah State University.
These sessions were tailored to equip participants with practical knowledge and tools to identify the early signs of mental health issues and substance abuse, as well as to guide them on where to seek help.

One of the unique features of the initiative was its focus on real-life experiences. Stories were shared by individuals and families directly affected by substance misuse, allowing students and community members to gain a deeper understanding of the human impact of these issues. These lived narratives helped dismantle myths and reduce stigma, making it easier for others to come forward and seek help.
As a result of the initiative, five families who previously had no knowledge of available support systems were able to access medical and psychological assistance for relatives battling substance dependence. This outcome underscores the effectiveness of the program in reaching those in urgent need.
Through this joint effort, the initiative has laid a strong foundation for continued advocacy and support for mental health and substance abuse education. The organizers believe that through community collaboration, consistent education, and the removal of stigma, long-term positive change is possible.

Looking Ahead
Together, we can create a supportive environment that prioritizes mental health and combats substance abuse—ensuring a healthier, more resilient future for our youth and society at large.
This campaign is only the beginning. NRM and its partners are committed to sustaining these efforts, expanding their reach to more communities, and incorporating feedback from participants to enhance future programs.
