Network for Rural Missions (NRM), in collaboration with SOLWODI GERMANY, a renowned German organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable women in both Germany and Ghana, organized a two-day training workshop on preventing irregular migration in Ghana. The workshop aimed to build the capacities of NGOs in the four northern regions (Northern, Savana, North East, and Upper East regions). This collaboration was designed to enhance the capabilities of NGOs and government agencies in these regions, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to educate communities about the dangers of irregular migration and promote safe migration practices.

With funding from GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) and implemented on behalf of BMF (Bundesministerium der Finanzen), the initiative sought to address the root causes of irregular migration by raising awareness and understanding among local populations. The project recognizes that many individuals undertake perilous journeys in search of better opportunities, often falling victim to exploitation and human trafficking. By empowering NGOs with the right resources and training, NRM and SOLWODI aim to create a robust network of advocates who can effectively communicate the risks associated with irregular migration and the importance of pursuing legal pathways.

The capacity-building workshop covered a wide range of topics, including the legal frameworks surrounding migration, the socio-economic factors driving irregular migration, and the right pathways for migration to Germany. Representatives from the Ghanaian-European Center were also present to inform participants about legal migration routes. They encouraged participants to sensitize their communities to approach their office for further advice on job opportunities and documentation requirements should they choose to migrate to Germany. By equipping the NGOs with the necessary skills and knowledge, NRM and SOLWODI hope to create a ripple effect, where informed individuals will share their insights with others, ultimately leading to more informed and empowered communities.
